It is the fifth province of Pakistan, formerly known as Northern Area. The capital of Gilgit-Baltistan is Gilgit. The GB has total area of 72,971km² and according to 2013 survey it has population of 1.249 million. The largest city of GB is Skardu. The main tourist activities in GB are trekking and mountaineering.
The culture of Gilgit-Baltistan is diverse. There are different sects, traditions and customs. The languages spoken in GB are Balti, Shina, Khuwar, Domaki and Urdu. The traditional dress for men is shalwar kameez and woolen cap (Commonly known as Chitrali Topi) and traditional dress for women is shalwar kameez, colorful frocks and irani cap.
Tourist destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan is a beautiful place. It has beautiful weather and tourists can visit GB at any time of the years. There is so much to do in GB round the year. Every season has its own charm and attraction. It is not only famous for its mountains but the landscape of GB includes lakes, glaciers and valleys. The world’s second highest peak K2 is also located in Gilgit-Baltistan.
K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. It is 8,611 meters above the sea level. K2 is located on the Pak-China border between Baltistan regions of Gilgit-Baltistan. K2 is the point of attraction for many people specially the climbers since years. Great number of people climb the K2 Mountain every year.
Attabad Lake is located in Hunza district of GB. In 2010 after the huge landslide in Attabad village, Attabad Lake was formed. It has been utmost tourist attraction since then. The tourists can do many activities here such as boating and fishing. The water of this lake is freezing cold.
Kachura Lakes are two beautiful lakes situated in Skardu district, the upper Kachura and lower Kachura Lake. The lower Kachura Lake is also known as Shangrila Lake. The depth of the lakes is about 70 meters. The main tourist activities are fishing and boating. If you are fond of photography, you should visit this place to capture scenic natural beauty.
Rama Lake is a beautiful Lake located at the top of Astore Valley. It is surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery, which gives a very pleasant sight. as winters are harsh in this area, the suitable time to visit is summer and spring.
Satpara is a natural lake that is sited in the Skardu. It is also source of fresh water to the Skardu region. It is at the north side of the Skardu. Satpara Lake is also known as Sadpara Lake. This beautiful lake is encircled with the mountains that gives a very calm view.
Borith Lake is a saline water lake located in the Gulmit region of Hunza Valley. The site of the Borith Lake is very beautiful and tourists can so lot of recreational activities here. The lake with the crystal clear water bordered by the greenery, presents a mesmerizing sight.
This is a must visit place. Baltit fort is located in the village of Karimabad in Hunza Valley. It was built in 8th CE. Baltit fort is a three story building with a structure of wood, stone and mud. It is UNESCO’s world heritage center since 2004. Baltit fort is one of the most beautiful and famous forts of Pakistan. This is over 600 years old but it is renovated timely.
Altit fort is a masterpiece showcasing the antique architecture. Altit fort is also situated in Hunza Valley in Altit town it was the residence of the rulers of the Hunza Valley. Altit fort is 110 years old and is the oldest monument in Gilgit-Baltistan. Altit fort has also received UNESCO Asia Pacific Award in 2011.
This beautiful valley is located in the Gilgit district. It is about half an hour drive away from Gilgit district. Summer time is the best to visit this valley. It is perfect place for camping. Bagrot valley is famous for its greenery, fruits and vegetables. Shina language is spoken in Bagrot valley.
Kargah valley is situated in Gilgit district about 10 km away from the city. Kargah valley has a large carving of the Buddha, about 500 feet high. In Kargah valley the river flows between the mountains and there are plenty of trout fish in the river. If you are a person who loves fishing and is also interested in ancient history then this is a must visit place for you.
Duiker valley is situated on the top of Hunza valley and is about 30 minutes’ drive away from Karimabad village. Duiker will present you the stunning views of the mountains, river and greenery. The best time to visit this valley is April and October.
Passu is a small village located in Hunza district, between the glaciers named Batura and Passu glaciers. You will see the high mountain peaks in Passu. If you love hiking, then this is the perfect place for you. Tupopdan peak is the famous place of Passu, also known as passu cones.
Langar is a beautiful valley surrounded by the lush green mountains. Langar valley also has many water brooks. It is situated in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan. People who are fond of fishing will enjoy staying at this place as the water streams in Langar valley have variety of fish.
Located in the Ghizer district of GB, Hundrap is a beautiful valley. This valley is bordered by Beautiful Mountains. It is the best site for hiking, fishing and camping. The beautiful mountains covered with snow in winters present the most picturesque view.
The view of this valley is wonderful. It’s beautiful mountains, river streams, green fields and forests make it the perfect place to spend your vacations here. Minimarg is the lovely valley located in the Astore region.
The Skardu valley is sited in the Skardu district. It is the main tourist attraction for trekker and mountaineers as this valley is surrounded by high peaked mountains that make it the perfect spot for trekking and hiking. The best season to visit this valley is April to October.
This spectacular valley is about 10km away from Nagar valley. Hopar valley is a group of different villages. Hopar also serves as the base camp for mountaineers as it is surrounded by many mountains and glaciers.
Khaplu valley is situated in the east of Skardu district. Khaplu is the best place for trekking. Many famous mountains such as Masherbrum, Sherpi Kagh, Sia kangri and Siachen are located here. Annually around 100,000 tourists visit Khaplu valley to see the Siachen glacier. According to the Forbes magazine, Khaplu is the coolest tourist place.
